Jones Co. clerk denies shoplifting charge
Crime

Connie Lee Mize joined her attorney Gregory Bushway to speak out against allegations she shoplifted $115 worth of items from an Eatonton Wal-Mart.

Eatonton Police records allege Mize used the self checkout to add extra items to her bag without paying for them.

Bushway says that allegation is false. He says Mize went through a large amount of items on the self-checkout with an employee nearby, and had even asked for help on scanning some of them.

He says Mize went about her business and wasn't aware there was an issue until a manager approached her as she was leaving and told her some of the items didn't scan.

He says Mize was in the process of trying to buy the items and get the issue fixed when she was arrested.

Bushway says she's worked as a clerk the Jones County Board of Commissioners for 3 years and is concerned about her reputation.

He says both he and Mize have tried to contact Wal-Mart to get a copy of the security camera, but Wal-Mart denied their request.

Eatonton Police say the case is still under investigation.
