Gray Fire Department Collects Cans to Benefit Burn Foundation

GRAY, GA.--The City of Gray Fire Department is helping raise funds for the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, a SFBF news release says.

They're doing this by collecting aluminum cans for the "Can-It!' collection.

The funds help families of burn patients at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

Drop off your aluminum cans at the can wagon at the fire department's headquarters at  111 James Street in Gray

For more information, contact Bobbie Jo Gainey at 1-800-650-BURN or Chief Max Wood at 478-390-6700.

Jones County Faces Wildfire Threat

Jones County Faces Wildfire Threat

Forecasters warn the threat of wildfires is high across much of Georgia, and any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for high fire danger from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

The warning covers North and Central Georgia, where winds are expected to gust up to 25 mph.

The "red flag" warning covers all of Central Georgia's counties. The warning says people should take care with outdoor fires and contact local authorities before burning.

13WMAZ meteorologist David Ernst says a measuring station at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport has gotten 7.92 inches of rain this year. That's more than 6 inches below normal and more than 4 inches less than last year.

He said Central Georgia has seen sustained wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph.

Forecasters say humidity will be low, helping to create potentially dangerous fire conditions.

Turkey Season Opens Saturday

Turkey Season Opens Saturday

The turkey hunting season opens Saturday, March 24, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources news release says.

To go turkey hunting, you'll need a valid hunting license and big game license to legally hunt turkeys in Georgia. If you're on a Wildlife Management Area, you'll also need a WMA license. You can buy licenses online, at a retail license vendor or by phone at 1-800-366-2661.

If planning to hunt on private land, you'll need permission from the landowner first.

There is a limit to turkey hunting: only male turkeys can be hunted and the season bag limit is three turkeys per hunter.

Here are some turkey hunting safety precautions to study up on before going on the hunt:
