Energy Assistance Program to Open

Georgia’s regular Energy Assistance Program will open on Dec. 1, 2010 for all eligible households.

The program provides financial assistance to low-income, elderly and handicapped households to help pay their home heating costs.

Households participating in the program must meet income criteria and be responsible for the cost of heating their homes.  To be eligible, households must have an income equal to or less than 60 percent of the state median income guidelines - $21,940 for a one-person household, $28,691 for two people, $35,442 for three people, $42,193 for four people, $48,944 for five people, $55,695 for six people, $59,961 for seven people, or  $58,226 for eight people.

Payments will be made primarily by checks to home energy suppliers for gas, electricity, wood, coal, or kerosene used in heating a home.

The one-time payments will average about $345 per household.
