The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) anticipates more travelers than usual with Christmas Day falling on a Saturday this year.
High congestion areas include I-75, I-16, and I-475 in Bibb County, the DOT release says.
“We anticipate heavy traffic throughout the metro Atlanta area beginning Thursday around noon” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr. “Mall and retail center traffic will be particularly congested. Additionally, many travelers will be returning home over the weekend.”
Motorists should expect congestion near malls and retail centers throughout the week leading up to Christmas Day.
The DOT will suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstates and state routes from noon Thursday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Dec. 27 at 5 a.m.
