That's according to a Red Cross news release.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the North Carolina coast and the Red Cross has opened shelters in the state as evacuation orders go into effect.

In addition, more than 200 Red Cross mobile feeding vehicles are heading towards the coast to help people in the path of the storm, the release says.

Red Cross Urges Preparedness for Hurricane Season

The American Red Cross prepares for Hurricane Irene across the East Coast this week by registered available volunteers for support evacuation.

While "Georgia may escape the brunt" of the storm," Red Cross organizers urge the public to use this time as a reminder to finalize hurricane preparation plans and get a family emergency kit ready, a Red Cross news release says.

Hurricane season runs from July through November in the North Atlantic.

Emergency kits should include:

  • 3-day supply of water for each person
  • food that doesn't need refrigeration
  • flashlights
  • battery-operated radio
  • first aid kid
