Beware of the Humidity!

Heat and humidity are the two “H’s” that get us in the summertime. In fact, the combination can be downright unbearable. Need some proof? Well here you go… 95° compared with a 70° dew point feels like 105°!! You can check out other temperature and dew point combinations on the heat index chart.

The humidity can be deceiving though! My husband and I were about to go to the gym yesterday afternoon when I decided we should run around the neighborhood since it wasn’t raining and temperatures were only in the 70s (the reasons we were that “mild” at 2pm were the clouds and previous rain).

About a quarter of a mile into the run, I realized that it may not be hot but it was incredibly steamy. I think I sweat more than I ever have on a run!

Rainfall Surpluses in the Past

“Rain is a Good Thing,” at least that’s what country singer and Georgia native Luke Bryan sings. And these days I think all of us, not just the farmers, agree! I know my husband and I want it for our grass, which is definitely a little crunchy these days. When Mother Nature waters the lawn, it’s cheaper than when we run the sprinklers!

With the extremely dry conditions lately, it’s hard to think about when we have had extremely wet conditions…at least that is the case for me and I’m not the only one! A viewer wanted to know when was the last time we had a rainfall surplus going into the spring and going into the summer. After some help from the National Weather Service, this is what I found:

The normal rainfall amount in Macon for January 1st through March 21st is 12.96 inches.

We had a surplus going into the spring in 2003…we started the spring with 14.49”, which is 1.53” above normal.

Some Changes are Coming!!

The official start to summer is right on our doorstep as the season begins tomorrow at 1:16 p.m. It doesn’t seem like a big deal though since it has felt like summer for the past month! Highs have been 90° or higher since May 20th. I should mention that 5 days so far this month we have topped out in the triple digits. The heat isn’t going away any time soon, but it is expected to be less intense for the end of the work week and the upcoming weekend.

While there has been an abundance of heat, there has been a shortage of rain. Almost all of Central Georgia is still in an extreme drought. In Macon, we are over 7 and a half inches below where we should be in rainfall for the year. Rain chances are looking decent Thursday and Friday as a trough of low pressure at the upper levels of the atmosphere sets up across the area. This trough is also responsible for the “cooler” temperatures.

Hello Summer?

The official season doesn’t start until June 21st, but it already feels like summer here in Central Georgia. On top of the heat, it feels like summer because all the kids are out of school and area pools and lakes are packed, especially on the weekends.

The hot weather can be brutal and that’s why you need to handle the heat with care. Here are a few basic tips.

Drought Conditions Worsen for Central Georgia

The drought situation here in Central Georgia continues to exacerbate. Most of the area is now considered to be in an extreme drought, basically from Macon southward. Areas north of Macon, including Milledgeville, Gray, and Forsyth, are classified as being in a severe drought. As of June 1st, we are 7.20 inches below normal for the year.

Let’s take a quick look back and see how we got so far behind in the rainfall department.

In March, we got just over 4 inches of rain…which was over three quarters of an inch below normal.

In April, we only got 1.30 inches which is close to 2 inches below normal for the month.

In May, we got less than an inch of rain! We only received 0.66” in the rain bucket, which is 2 and a third inches below normal for the month.
